Emerald is a green variety of Beryl mineral family. Its name comes from the French word "esmeralde", which came from the Greek word "smaragdos". The latter basically means "green gemstone". The most important factor in emerald's value is its color (vivid green is valued the most). The color in Emerald is caused by the presence or absence of chromium, vanadium, and iron.
